Governor Abbott Appoints Three To State Board For Educator Certification

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed D. Scott Ridley, Tommy L. Coleman and Carlos Omar Villagrana to the State Board for Educator Certification for a terms set to expire February 1, 2017, February 1, 2019 and February 1, 2021, respectively. The board develops certification and continuing education requirements and standards of conduct for public school teachers.

D. Scott Ridley, Ph.D. of Lubbock is dean of the College of Education at Texas Tech University. He is a member of Deans for Impact, Educate Texas and the Southern Regional Education Board Teacher Preparation Commission and a board member of the United Way of Lubbock. Ridley received a Bachelor of Arts in economics from New Mexico State University and a Master of Science and a Doctor of Philosophy in educational psychology from The University of Texas at Austin.

Tommy L. Coleman, J.D. of Livingston is an assistant district attorney for the Polk County Criminal District Attorney’s Office. He is a former non-commissioned officer in the United States Army Reserve and a National Defense Service Medal recipient. He is a board member of the Polk County Historical Commission and a member of the Rotary Club of Livingston, Texas District and County Attorneys Association and the State Bar of Texas. Coleman received a Bachelor of Science in political science from Texas Wesleyan University and a Juris Doctor from South Texas College of Law in Houston.  

Carlos Omar Villagrana of Houston is the managing director of the Teaching Excellence Program for YES Prep Public Schools. He is a member of Prospanica Association of Hispanic Professionals and a former member of the Texas Educator Preparation Advisory Committee. Villagrana received a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Oklahoma State University and a Master of Education in curriculum and development from Houston Baptist University.
