Governor Abbott Proclaims July 2022 Watch Your Car Month In Texas

July 1, 2022 | Austin, Texas | Proclamation

Our communities cannot prosper if they are not safe.  The actions and choices of criminals can often disrupt our lives, damaging the vital sense of security inherent in our tightly knit Texas communities.  Every year, motorists and businesses in Texas have estimated nearly two billion in losses due to motor vehicle burglary and theft.  According to Texas law enforcement officials, motorists run the greatest risk of having their car stolen during the summer months.

Unlocked vehicles, forgotten keys, and exposed valuables contribute to a large percentage of these crimes.  To combat motor vehicle-related crimes, the Texas Legislature established the Texas Motor Vehicle Crimes Prevention Authority, which has created the “If You Like It, Lock It!” campaign to raise awareness and reduce motor vehicle burglary and theft.

The month of July is dedicated to raising awareness about the simple habits that all Texans can adopt to protect themselves from the threat of motor vehicle theft.  These steps include locking your vehicle and taking your keys, never leaving your car unattended while it is running, removing valuables when you leave or keeping them out of sight, and, in the event of a vehicle theft, immediately contacting the appropriate law enforcement officials and filing a report.

At this time, I encourage all Texans to learn more about the ways we can all protect ourselves from motor vehicle crime.  By working together, we can ensure a safer and more prosperous state for all.

Therefore, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim July 2022 to be Watch Your Car Month in Texas, and urge the appropriate recognition whereof.

In official recognition whereof, I hereby affix my signature this the 23rd day of June, 2022.

GREG ABBOTT
