Governor Abbott Names Niermann Chair Of Texas Commission On Environmental Quality

Governor Greg Abbott has named Jon Niermann chair of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality. The commission protects the state's public health and natural resources consistent with sustainable economic development.

“Jon understands the need for sensible regulations that protect the safety and health of Texans, while safeguarding our natural resources and allowing for sustainable economic growth,” said Governor Greg Abbott. “I’m confident he will continue to effectively lead the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in his new role.” 

Jon Niermann has served as a commissioner since September 2015. Previously, he served as chief of the Environmental Protection Division in the Texas Attorney General’s Office, and as an attorney at Baker Botts, L.L.P., where he was recognized with the Judge Thomas Gibbs Gee Award for Outstanding Pro Bono Service and the Judge Suzanne Covington Pro Bono Service Award. He is a member of the Western States Water Council and the Good Neighbor Environmental Board. Niermann received a Bachelor of Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Master of Business Administration and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Oregon.
