Governor Abbott Reappoints Charles Smith As Executive Commissioner Of Health And Human Services Comm
Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed Charles Smith Executive Commissioner of Texas’ Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC), effective February 1, 2017, for a term set to expire February 1, 2019.
Charles Smith was selected by Gov. Greg Abbott to serve as the Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner for the Health and Human Services Commission effective June 1, 2016. During his tenure at HHSC, Smith has worked to improve the agency's efficiency and accountability to Texas citizens. He previously served as the Chief Deputy Executive Commissioner for the Texas HHSC and as the Deputy for Child Support at the Texas Office of the Attorney General. In his role at the Office of the Attorney General, Smith was responsible for the overall delivery of child support services performed by the division’s 2,700 employees. His work in this area has earned him multiple awards throughout his career, and under Smith’s leadership the Texas Child Support Division was recognized as the most efficient and effective program in the nation for two years in a row. He was re-appointed to his position by current Attorney General Ken Paxton in January 2015. Smith is a graduate of Texas Tech University.
