Governor Abbott Names Chair And Appoints Three To Texas Optometry Board

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Ty Sheehan and Bill Thompson, O.D. and reappointed Mario Gutierrez, O.D. to the Texas Optometry Board for terms set to expire on January 31, 2023. Additionally, the Governor named Gutierrez presiding officer of the board. The board oversees licensing and regulation of optometrists in Texas.

Ty Sheehan of San Antonio is a shareholder with Hornberger Fuller & Garza Incorporated, and represents companies, partnerships and individuals in business, commercial real estate and securities transactions. He currently serves as the treasurer of the San Antonio Bar Association, San Antonio Bar Foundation, and the Community Justice Program. He formerly served on the board of directors of Young Texans Against Cancer, San Antonio Young Lawyers Association, and the San Antonio Young Lawyers Foundation. He is also a member of the San Antonio Library Foundation, Witte Museum, and the Leadership Organization of Professionals. Sheehan received a Bachelor of Arts in economics and real estate from Baylor University and a Juris Doctor degree from St. Mary’s University School of Law, graduating Summa Cum Laude.

Bill Thompson, O.D. of Richardson is a doctor of optometry and owner of Buckner Vision. While serving as a Captain in the Army, he served as chief of optometry at the U.S. Army Hospital in Wurzburg, Germany, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He is a past president of the Northeast Texas Optometric Society, former member of the Texas Optometric Association Board of Trustees, and a current member of the American Optometric Association, National Association of Realtors, Texas Association of Realtors, and the Collin County Association of Realtors. He is also a former chairman of the school board of the Garland Christian Academy. Thompson received a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock and Doctor of Optometry degree from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tennessee.

Mario Gutierrez, O.D. of San Antonio is a therapeutic optometrist and optometric glaucoma specialist, and is president and CEO of South Texas Vision Associates P.A. Additionally, he is an adjunct clinical professor at the University of Houston College of Optometry and an adjunct clinical professor at the UIW Rosenberg School of Optometry. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry, diplomate of the American Board of Optometry, and a member the Bexar County District Optometric Society and the American and Texas Optometric associations. He is the administrator for Vision Source San Antonio and has been appointed to the Vision Source Advisory Board and a member of the Chairman’s Club of Optometry Giving Sight. Gutierrez received a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Houston.
