Governor Abbott Appoints Three to Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors
Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Carmelia “Lia” Amuna, Ph.D. to the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors for a term set to expire on February 1, 2027. Additionally, the Governor reappointed Loretta Bradley, Ph.D. and Brenda Compagnone for terms set to expire February 1, 2027 and February 1, 2025, respectively. The board has licensing, examination, and rulemaking responsibilities in the field of professional counseling.
Carmelia “Lia” Amuna, Ph.D. of Killeen is the Director of the Student Wellness and Counseling Center at Texas A&M University – Central Texas. She is the president of the Texas University Counseling Center Directors Association, Rotary International – Killeen Heights Chapter, Texas A&M – Chancellor's Century Council and Greater Killeen Community Clinic. Amuna received a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Mercer University, a Master of Arts in Counseling from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Health Education from A.T. Still University of Health Sciences.
Loretta Bradley, Ph.D. of Lubbock holds a Paul Whitfield Horn Professorship in Counselor Education, and is coordinator of the Counselor Education Program at Texas Tech University. She has served as president of several organizations including the American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, International Association for Marriage and Family Counselors, and Texas Association for Adult Development and Aging. Bradley received a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and Biological Sciences and Master in Counseling Education from the University of Kentucky, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Counselor Education from Purdue University.
Brenda Compagnone of San Antonio is a Licensed Professional Counselor at Consulenza Familiare, LLC. She is a former member of the Dimlit County Appraisal Board, and volunteer with the Battered Women’s Shelter. Compagnone received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from The University of Texas at San Antonio and a master’s degree in education from Sul Ross State University.
These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
