Governor Abbott Announces Growing Support For Legislation To Expedite Construction Permitting Process

July 20, 2017 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that his call to speed up the permitting process for local governments is generating growing support across Texas. Expediting the permitting process is part of the Governor's 20-item agenda for the ongoing special legislative session.

“Some cities have gotten out of control with serious barriers to reasonable economic development.  The permitting process needs to be reasonable and without unreasonable delays.” – Jon Fisher, President, Associated Builders and Contractors of Texas.

“The Texas Nursery and Landscape applauds Governor Abbott's efforts to move legislation that expedites, as well as provides consistency in obtaining permits. Both will allow contractors to provide their services more efficiently due to consistency between political subdivisions. Ultimately this legislation will be a boon for small businesses burdened by cumbersome local bureaucracy.” – Amy Graham, President & CEO, the Texas Nursery & Landscape Association

“On behalf of the residential construction and development industry in Texas, the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) will continue to work with the Governor and Legislature to protect private property rights from overly burdensome governmental regulations, taxes and fees. Easing the load of skyrocketing property taxes, expediting the permitting process, and protecting property owners from egregious regulation changes on existing property and onerous tree ordinances are issues TAB has regularly advanced over its 70 years of existence. TAB applauds Governor Abbott for his steadfast commitment to reducing onerous and costly regulations, taxes and fees on private individuals and businesses across the state. Though the residential construction industry maintains its status as an economic driver in Texas, regulatory decisions by state and local governments can and will have an impact on the cost and availability of housing.” – Rick McGuire, President, Texas Association of Builders

“Unnecessary delays in government permitting cost businesses and customers valuable time and resources. TRA supports efforts to expedite government permitting processes and removing unneeded red tape from private business expansion in Texas.” – George Kelemen, President and CEO, Texas Retailers Association

“The Texas Association of REALTORS® commends Gov. Abbott’s commitment to protecting property owners’ rights. We agree that local ordinances should allow property owners to use their property as they see fit and without risk of the city changing the rules midway through the development phase.”  - Vicki Fullerton, Chairman, Texas Association of REALTORS®

“Dealing with local government permitting has become a nightmare for our small business members who have no in house compliance department. Time is money, and small business owners are strained in both areas. We are grateful the Governor has added ‘speeding up local government permitting’ to the call. It couldn’t come at a better time.”  - Will Newton, Executive Director, National Federation of Independent Business - Texas
