Visiting Thomas Haley Elementary School

March 25, 2015

I had the privilege of spending last Friday morning in Irving visiting with students and teachers at Thomas Haley Elementary School. I received a very warm welcome from Principal Alberto Zavala and Irving ISD Superintendent Dr. Jose Parra, and visited several classrooms – a Kindergarten classroom, 1st Grade classroom, 3rd Grade classroom, and 5th Grade classroom. The 5th Grade classroom I visited is taught by the Irving ISD Teacher of the Year – what an honor for Thomas Haley Elementary! And Irving ISD was the National AP District of the Year – I am very proud of everything Irving has achieved.

It was so wonderful to be back in a school and have the opportunity to visit with teachers and students. I felt like I was back at home. The children were so motivated to be learning, which made me feel excited about our state’s future. As a former teacher and principal, I know that the path to success begins with education. Greg and I are committed to making sure that all Texas students have access to the best education possible, and we look forward to working with administrators, teachers and parents across our great state to create the best education system in the nation. I had a wonderful time seeing the students work and I encourage all the students and teachers to keep up the great work!
