March 20, 2018 | Ausstin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today announced Smith & Nephew, Inc. has selected its Fort Worth facility to locate a $29 million project. A global manufacturer and supplier of advanced medical equipment and technologies headquartered in London, Smith & Nephew supports healthcare professionals in over 100 countries. Smith & Nephew currently employs nearly 200 Texans in Fort Worth and will create 100 new jobs by the end of the proposed project. A Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant offer of $730,000 has been extended to Smith & Nephew. Fort Worth was competing for the project with Oklahoma, Tennessee and Hull, England.

“This new Smith & Nephew, Inc. project in Fort Worth is just the latest example of the growing diversity of Texas' strong economy,” said Governor Abbott. “The manufacturing and medical technology industries continue to boom in Texas and especially in the Fort Worth area, and this project is further proof of that success. I thank Smith & Nephew, Inc. for their continued investment in our economy and for creating hundreds of jobs for hard working Texans.”

Matt Stober, President, Global Operations for Smith & Nephew, said: “Smith & Nephew is thrilled to partner with state and local government to bring new manufacturing jobs into Tarrant County. Fort Worth is already the U.S. headquarters for our Advanced Wound Management business, and home to a team with a deep expertise in wound care biotherapeutics, important and novel treatments used by clinicians to improve the lives of many thousands of patients every year. This is an important investment for Smith & Nephew that will secure our manufacturing process in this area and create many high quality jobs for local scientists, engineers and technicians.”

“We are very excited that Smith & Nephew has chosen to expand their operational presence in Fort Worth,” said Robert Sturns, Director for the Fort Worth Economic Development Department. “Our community has a strong interest in advancing opportunities in bio-tech and medical innovation and see this partnership with Smith & Nephew as a key component in those efforts. Fort Worth's commitment to supporting medical and life services companies is perfectly suited for international manufacturers like Smith & Nephew and the support of the State was instrumental in bringing this project to fruition.”

Under Governor Abbott’s leadership, the Texas Enterprise Fund helped to close the deal on 27 projects in 2015–2017 that committed to over $820 million in new capital investments and more than 16,000 new direct jobs all across the state, from Amarillo to the Rio Grande Valley and communities in between. TEF also serves as a jobs multiplier, supporting thousands more indirect jobs at existing local and small businesses. The $70 million invested in job creation over the last three years also helped close the deal on 6 corporate headquarter relocations to Texas. Administered by the Economic Development and Tourism Division within the Office of the Governor, the Texas Enterprise Fund helps to strengthen the state’s already diverse and growing economy and attract new jobs to communities across the state.
