Governor Abbott Reappoints Jernigan And Jones To Board Of Pardons And Paroles
Governor Greg Abbott has reappointed A. D’Wayne Jernigan and Carmella Jones to the Board of Pardons and Paroles for terms set to expire on February 1, 2025. The board makes parole decisions for Texas prison inmates, determines conditions for parole and mandatory supervision, and makes recommendations on clemency matters to the governor.
D’Wayne Jernigan of Del Rio has over fifty years of law enforcement experience and has served as a Sheriff, Deputy Sheriff, Police Officer, Federal Sky Marshal, as a Special Agent-in-Charge for the United States Customs Service, Office of Investigations & as the Customs Attaché posted to the U. S. Embassy in Rome, Italy. He has held leadership positions and is a member of both the National Sheriffs’ Association and the Sheriffs’ Association of Texas. He is a charter member of the Southwest Border Sheriffs’ Association and the Texas Border Sheriffs’ Coalition and a member of the Association of Former Customs Special Agents, Texas Association of Licensed Investigators & the Texas Process Servers Association. His volunteer work includes past president and member of the Border Amateur Radio Society and with the Rancho Dos Countries Soup Kitchen providing for the needy. He has also served seven years as a Board Member of Heritage Academy Charter Schools, three as President of the Board of Trustees. Jernigan earned an Associate’s degree in Police Administration, Criminal Justice and Investigations from Cooke County Junior College.
Carmella Jones of Sweeny has twenty-five years of law enforcement and corrections experience. She was elected as Armstrong County Sheriff and served as sheriff for six years. She is a lifetime member of the Texas Jail Association, Sheriff’s Association of Texas, and the Girl Scouts of America and a member of the Texas Chief Deputies Association and the American Jail Association. Jones has earned certifications including Master Peace Officer, Master Jailer, and Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Instructor.
These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
