Texas Holocaust And Genocide Commission Seeks Applications For Inaugural Berkowitz Institute
The Texas Holocaust and Genocide Commission (THGC) is now accepting applications for the inaugural Peter N. Berkowitz Institute. The seminar will provide advanced training in Holocaust and genocide education to a select group of Texas educators including teachers, curriculum specialists, and librarians who serve grades 6-12 in any subject where Holocaust and/or genocides are studied. Applicants who are selected for the seminar will have demonstrated commitment, proficiency, and effectiveness in teaching about the Holocaust and/or genocides.
Participants in this interdisciplinary institute will learn from top scholars in the field, survivors, and staff members of relevant organizations and museums. Sessions will employ multimedia resources and meaningful discussions with a focus on history, memory, representation, Texas connections, and best practices in the classroom.
Upon completion of the course, each participant will hold the title of Peter N. Berkowitz Teaching Fellow, and will be called upon to serve as a THGC liaison to their campus and community. Participants will also be part of an emerging network of Texas leaders in Holocaust and genocide education.
The 2020 Berkowitz Institute will be held in Austin from July 7-9, 2020. Attendance at the workshop is free and restricted to accepted applicants who will also receive teaching materials at no charge. Travel, meals, lodging, and teaching materials will be covered. The Berkowitz Institute also confers professional development hours in Social Studies and English Language Arts.
The deadline to submit an application is Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at 4:00PM. Applications can be submitted through the THGC website.
