Governor Abbott Proclaims September 15-October15, 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month In Texas
Of all the 50 states in the nation, no other has a more interesting, diverse, and rich heritage than the great state of Texas. Before the United States, and even before the Republic of Texas, this land was sought after by many world powers. Diverse peoples have laid claim to Texas, and each of them has guided and shaped the trajectory of our state’s culture and history. As such, Texans today are blessed with a truly vast cultural landscape.
Due to both geography and history, the storied legacy of Texas has been profoundly influenced by individuals of Hispanic descent. During the Texas Revolution, Texians and Tejanos joined together to forge a proud, independent republic separate from the Centralist Republic of Mexico. Ever since, the destinies of Mexico and Texas have been closely intertwined. Hispanic heritage and culture have left many marks and influenced Texas at the most fundamental levels. From Tex-Mex food, to Tejano music, and more, the influence of Hispanic culture permeates much of the state we know and love.
Across the Lone Star State, Hispanic Americans hold places of prominence in our growing communities. Whether serving as doctors, teachers, small business owners, or community leaders, Hispanic Americans play an important role in Texas’ story. My wife, Cecilia, is the first Hispanic First Lady of Texas and a grandchild of immigrants from Mexico. She rose through the ranks as a teacher and a principal and has led many philanthropic projects to help our fellow Texans. Her own life story and incredible accomplishments epitomize the American Dream.
Each year in our country, a month is designated to recognize and celebrate the rich heritage, vibrant culture, and manifold contributions of Hispanic Americans. At this time, I encourage all Texans to celebrate Hispanic heritage. With this celebration, let us embrace the diversity of our great state while strengthening the bonds that unite us as Texans and as Americans.
Therefore, I, Greg Abbott, Governor of Texas, do hereby proclaim the period from September 15 through October 15, 2024, to be
Hispanic Heritage Month
in Texas and urge all Texans to observe the occasion with appropriate ceremonies and activities.
