July 23, 2019 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that Buffalo, LLC will open a new flat roll steel mill manufacturing facility in Sinton, Texas. Buffalo is a subsidiary of Steel Dynamics, Inc., one of the largest domestic steel producers and metal recyclers in the country. The new facility will create more than 590 new jobs and generate more than $1.9 billion in capital investment. A Texas Enterprise Fund (TEF) grant of $5,920,000 has been extended to Buffalo, LLC.

"Texas remains the premier economic destination in America because of hardworking Texans and job creators like Buffalo, LLC," said Governor Abbott. "This $1.9 billion capital investment and the nearly 600 new jobs are a testament to the strong economic climate we have created in the Lone Star State. The state of Texas thanks Buffalo, LLC for investing in the city of Sinton and we look forward to working with them to grow Texas' reputation as the nation's leading economic powerhouse."

"We are extremely excited to announce our selection of Sinton as the site for our next-generation, new flat roll steel mill investment," said Mark. D. Millett, President and Chief Executive Officer. "We are eager to join the Sinton community, and we appreciate the warm welcome and support that we have received from them, Governor Abbott and the State of Texas, as well as local leaders from San Patricio County, the City of Sinton, and the Sinton Independent School Board. We thank them for their trust, shared vision, and support for this important strategic investment. We anticipate the project will create approximately 600 well-paying positions, and abundant opportunities for indirect job growth from customers and other support service providers, bringing meaningful economic growth to the surrounding communities."

“In 2016, CCREDC did a Target Industry Analysis that helped us build the case for supporting a major Electric Arc Furnace Steel manufacturer and enhance our economic diversification," said Iain Vasey, President and CEO of the Corpus Christi Regional Economic Development Corporation. "CCREDC has been actively meeting with major companies in the steel industry since 2016 and we were able to meet with Steel Dynamics, Inc. as part of these efforts, and were impressed by the company’s commitment to good corporate citizenship, its environmental leadership and its focus on caring for employees. We are proud to have been able to work with SDI to help identify the site, assist the company and local governments in structuring a mutual-win incentive package, and support SDI in reaching its decision to locate here. This is a wonderful employer that will have a major positive impact that will be felt throughout the region. We thank them for their confidence in the Coastal Bend and look forward to helping them for many years to come.”

The impact for the city nearest the project will be transformational. Sinton Mayor Edward Adams is enthusiastic: “This is the biggest welcome we will have ever celebrated. Welcome to Sinton, Texas.”

San Patricio County Judge David Krebs is excited about the employment opportunities this project will present for the western part of his county. “SDI’s project represents a tremendous boom for Sinton and the surrounding region; it’s a win/ win for the city of Sinton, Sinton ISD, and the residents of the area who will have this new opportunity for employment,” he said.

“The Steel Dynamics team has been a pleasure to work with through this process and Sinton ISD is hopeful that they will choose Sinton as their site. A project of this magnitude, especially a company that is so employee friendly, would be a huge benefit to Sinton ISD, as well as the community of Sinton, San Patricio County and the State of Texas,” said Chad Jones, Superintendent of Sinton ISD.

“The Port of Corpus Christi is thrilled to welcome Steel Dynamics to the region. As we continue to build additional needed infrastructure to effectively manage the forecasted growth in exports, we will see more business investment coming to Corpus Christi, creating thousands more jobs and economic benefit for the Coastal Bend, Texas, and the Nation,” said Sean Strawbridge, Chief Executive Officer for the Port of Corpus Christi.
