First Lady Cecilia Abbott Delivers Commencement Address At Texas A&M University–San Antonio

December 19, 2018 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

First Lady Cecilia Abbott yesterday delivered the commencement address at Texas A&M University–San Antonio, congratulating the Class of 2018 on their academic achievements and encouraging them to continue to give back to others.

“Years from now, even months from now, today will be but a blur,” said First Lady Abbott. “You likely won’t remember who spoke at your graduation or what profound advice they shared. So, I ask that you remember just one word: Believe. Believe that you can be more. Believe that you can do more. Believe that you are made for more.

“You will leave Texas A&M–San Antonio with an amazing head start. Here, you have been nurtured in a diverse community with boundless potential, determined to propel the world forward, and committed to building a brighter future. The Governor joins me in congratulating you, the Class of 2018.”

As the students crossed the stage, the First Lady joined Dr. Cynthia Teniente-Matson, president of Texas A&M–San Antonio, in celebrating a milestone: More than 10,000 students have now graduated from Texas A&M–SA since becoming a standalone university in 2009.

A former teacher and principal, Cecilia Abbott attended the University of Texas at Austin before subsequently earning three degrees from the University of St. Thomas in Houston: a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in education and a master’s degree in theology.
