Texanthropy Spotlight: Association of Fundraising Professionals – Greater Austin Chapter

June 8, 2018

We all have a cause close to our heart, and one of the most impactful ways we can support our causes is by making a philanthropic donation. I’ve always said that philanthropy is in the DNA of every Texan, and the numbers show it’s true: generous Texans donate over $15.9 billion to charity each year. Without those donations, the more than 92,000 nonprofits and foundations across this great state couldn’t carry out their missions. And did you know that there’s an entire profession working behind the scenes to ensure that your donations are sought and used ethically and effectively?

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with fundraising professional representatives from the Greater Austin Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) during their Advocacy Workshop. It was such an honor to have the opportunity to join dozens of dedicated professionals from so many extraordinary Austin non-profit organizations.

Since 1960, AFP has inspired global change and supported efforts that generated over $1 trillion. Its 33,000+ members work to advance philanthropy through advocacy, research, and education and certification programs. AFP fosters the development and growth of fundraising professionals and promotes high ethical standards in the profession. When you work with an AFP member to facilitate your donation, you can trust that your dollars will be channeled in the best possible way to make a truly meaningful impact.

In Texas alone, there are 11 active chapters with 2,389 individual and organizational members who raise over $100 billion annually for local, statewide, and national nonprofit causes—equivalent to one-third of all charitable giving in North America. The public charities and foundations that AFP represents deliver vital community services, give a voice to the people, contribute to vibrant communities, and advance solutions to social challenges.
