Texanthropy Spotlight: AGE of Central Texas
During my years working at a senior health care services company, I had the pleasure of learning about a wonderful organization here in Austin that offers programming to older adults and family caregivers: AGE of Central Texas. Founded in 1986, AGE provides direct services to hundreds of older adults each year. AGE is the only licensed adult day health care center in the area. Other services include free loans of durable medical equipment to keep seniors safe and mobile, and invaluable education, resources, and support to the unpaid family caregivers who are supporting an older loved one.
The need for the services provided by AGE of Central Texas continues to skyrocket. Central Texas ranks as the fastest growing "pre-senior" population (age 55-64) in the nation and is ranked second in the U.S. for senior (age 65+) population growth. And, with approximately 16% of the population providing care for an older adult – while also trying to hold down a full-time job – AGE of Central Texas is helping make the Austin community a great place to age by tackling the challenges of aging with expert solutions, and ensuring that caregivers experience a journey of compassion and strength.
There are many ways that Texans can help AGE of Central Texas continue to support older adults and family caregivers, including:
- Volunteering your time or talents;
- Donating your unneeded walkers, wheelchairs, or other gently-used durable medical equipment;
- Following AGE of Central Texas on social media so you can know about events, specific needs, and programming.
And because June is Elder Abuse Prevention Month, I encourage all Texans to practice the Texas motto of “friendship” and make it a habit to check on your older adult neighbors.
