Celebrating the 2018 Texas Women’s Hall Of Fame Honorees

January 22, 2019

Seven remarkable Texas women were inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame last week, and I am so pleased that the honorees, or their representatives, and their families and friends could join us for the ceremony at a lovely luncheon on the grounds of the Governor’s Mansion.

Our guests and many VIPs enjoyed hearing the honorees’ inspiring stories—about how they overcame challenges or defied expectations, and about how they continue to share their amazing gifts with others. Even the weather cooperated for the outdoor event with sunshine and mild temperatures.

Recognized for outstanding achievement and for changing the course of history were:

Former First Lady Laura Bush (Public Service)

Senator Judith Zaffirini (Public Service)

Susan Dell (Philanthropy)

Tammie Jo Shults (Leadership)

Vikki Carr (Arts)

Simone Biles (Athletics)

Sister Elizabeth Anne Sueltenfuss (Education)

I invite you to watch the video presentation from the event and learn about these wonderful leaders.

The Governor and I would like to thank the distinguished honorees and their families for their enduring contributions to this great state.

We also both appreciate the many hours of hard work by the Governor’s Commission for Women in coordinating the awards and organizing the wonderful ceremony, and the State Agency Council volunteers who assisted in making the event possible.

The Texas Women’s Hall of Fame recognizes and celebrates outstanding Texas women not only for their individual achievements, but also for their contributions to the strength of the Lone Star State. Each honoree is recognized as a trailblazer, an inspiration for the next generation of leaders who will follow in their footsteps in fields such as business, education, military service, philanthropy, public service, sports, the arts and sciences, and more.

The Texas Women’s Hall of Fame accepts nominations biennially and is open to any native or current resident of Texas, living or deceased, who has made significant contributions benefitting the state of Texas. Texas residents submit written nominations, and a panel of judges selects the inductees into the Hall of Fame. A permanent exhibit is housed at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas, and currently features the biographies and photographs of all recipients.
