Governor Abbott Hosts Commission For Women’s Roundtable Discussion
Governor Abbott today hosted a roundtable discussion with members of the Governor’s Commission for Women, seeking their expertise and ideas on how to best support women entrepreneurs in Texas and expand economic opportunity to meet the Governor’s and the First Lady’s goal of making Texas the best state for women-owned businesses.
"Texas has a long history of strong women who have invested in themselves and others, building successful businesses and growing jobs across the state," said Governor Abbott. "I look forward to the work of the Commission as they help us develop strategies to increase opportunities for women to succeed in business in Texas. The Commission's diverse perspectives, representing different regions and industries, are instrumental in building a Texas of tomorrow that fosters greater female entrepreneurship and leadership success for women."
The Governor charged the Commission this year with developing a strategy and implementation plan to help make Texas the number one state for women-owned businesses, to help address the issue of human trafficking, and to help in rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Harvey.
The Governor's Commission for Women, administered within the Economic Development and Tourism Division in the Office of the Governor, seeks to promote opportunities for Texas women through outreach, education, research, and referral services. The Commission also serves as a liaison between Texas women and government agencies, as well as private entities in addressing women's needs.
The Commission serves to advance the goals and initiatives of the Office of the Governor and the Office of the First Lady by focusing on the following key initiatives:
• Women-owned businesses
• Education through STEM
• Volunteerism
• Women and children’s health
• Women veterans and service members
