Texanthropy Spotlight: University of Houston SURE™ Program - 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Award Winners
This past weekend I had the honor of giving the commencement address to the over 150 entrepreneurs graduating from the University of Houston SURE™ Program, which was the 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Award winner of the Higher Education Community Impact Award, and this week's Texanthropy Spotlight!
2018 Texas Main Street
Yesterday I had the pleasure of visiting Temple and Pearsall for the Texas Historical Commission Texas Main Street Program’s 2018 First Lady’s Tour. I was pleased to join local leaders, state officials, businesses, schoolchildren and community members in welcoming Temple and Pearsall as the newest Texas Main Street communities.
Blue Sunday
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, and all month long, families, businesses, organizations, and communities all across Texas and the United States have participated in events, recognized special days, and worn blue, all to raise awareness about child abuse in an attempt to prevent this heinous crime. Let's continue the efforts by participating in Blue Sunday, which is this coming Sunday - April 29th. Blue Sunday is a day where faith communities all across the nation are encouraged to join together and take time during their service to pray for the victims of child abuse and those that rescue them.
Visit a National Park During National Park Week
Texas is known for its beautiful scenery, wide open spaces and rugged landscapes begging to be explored. And there is no better time to get out and explore the outdoors in Texas than during National Park Week, which is celebrated from Saturday, April 21 until Sunday, April 29.

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, so it is fitting that this week’s Texanthropy Spotlight is highlighting the top organization in Texas committed to preventing child abuse: Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas (CACTX). Greg and I have been longstanding supporters of the children’s advocacy center model in Texas.

Texanthropy Spotlight: Texas Department of Family and Protective Services
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, so for each of the weekly Texanthropy Spotlights for the month of April, I will be highlighting an organization that is dedicated to taking care of our children. This week it’s the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, and in particular, the heroic efforts of their dedicated employees to care for children during Hurricane Harvey.
April is Month of the Military Child
Each April is celebrated across the United States as “Month of the Military Child” – a time for all Americans to show their support for military children and families. Here in Texas, we are also recognizing this month and the thousands of children of military members that live in Texas. In fact, Texas has the second-most number of military children.
