Remembering First Lady Barbara Bush

April 18, 2018

Greg, Audrey and I join Texans, Americans, and people all across the world in mourning the loss of former United States First Lady Barbara Bush. But, we also join friends, family and fans in celebrating the long and meaningful life she led, and the impactful legacy she leaves behind.

While her philanthropic work will most likely be remembered for its focus on illiteracy, she was also passionate about promoting volunteerism, feeding the hungry, caring for the homeless, and many children’s causes.

She was also a dedicated wife and partner to her husband of 73 years, President George HW Bush, a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a faithful public servant.

Our family extends our deepest condolences to the Bush family, who is in our constant thoughts and prayers right now.

“Barbara Bush dedicated her life to helping others. As only the second woman in history to be both the wife and mother of U.S. presidents, Barbara had a unique and profound impact on our country. Spearheading the fight against illiteracy, she created the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy, working to improve the lives of those less fortunate through education. Her selfless devotion to service defines the inspiring legacy Barbara has left behind. Her impact on Texas and our nation will forever be treasured. Cecilia and I extend our deepest condolences to President George H.W. Bush and the entire Bush family during this difficult time. We ask that all Texans join us in keeping them in their thoughts and prayers as they mourn the passing of a devoted wife, mother, and public servant.” – Governor Greg Abbott
