Governor Abbott Statement On Retirement Of Texas Health And Human Services Executive Commissioner
Governor Greg Abbott today issued the following statement after Charles Smith announced his retirement as Executive Commissioner of the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.
“In his nearly 30 years of service to the State of Texas, Charles has built a remarkable record as a public servant who has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to serving Texans,” said Governor Abbott. “Throughout his tenure, Charles has taken a hands-on approach to solving tough issues while displaying a tireless work ethic. I thank Charles for his service, and wish him nothing but success in his future endeavors. I am confident he will prove to be an invaluable asset wherever he should devote himself next.”
Charles Smith will continue serving as Executive Commissioner until May 31, 2018. Beginning June 1, 2018, former State Senator Tommy Williams – who currently serves as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Governor – will lead the agency on an interim basis. A search for a permanent replacement will begin immediately.
