Governor Abbott Requests Presidential Disaster Declaration Following Severe Weather In The Rio Grande Valley

July 10, 2019 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today sent a letter to President Donald Trump requesting a Presidential Disaster Declaration for three Texas counties located in the Rio Grande Valley that were impacted by storms that caused widespread damage and flooding. The three counties the Governor included in his request are Cameron, Hidalgo, and Willacy.

“The recent severe weather in the Rio Grande Valley has caused widespread damage, leaving many without the resources they need to recover from these storms,” said Governor Abbott. “That is why I am requesting a Presidential Disaster Declaration and am asking the federal government to provide individual assistance. Combined with state and local resources, this federal aid will allow those impacted to rebuild as quickly as possible.”

If granted, residents of these counties would be eligible for: Individual Assistance including the Individuals and Households Programs (IA), Other Needs Assistance (ONA), Crisis Counseling, Disaster Unemployment Assistance, Disaster Legal Assistance, Disaster Case Management; Direct Federal Assistance; and Hazard Mitigation.
