Texanthropy Spotlight: Central Texas Food Bank
The Central Texas Food Bank – formerly known as the Capital Area Food Bank – is located right here in Austin, and we are lucky to have them. As the largest hunger-relief charity in Central Texas, the Food Bank provided 28 million meals last year to Central Texas families in need.
For my Texanthropy announcement, I asked Kathy Green of the Central Texas Food Bank (as well as one of their top volunteers, Mace Massingill) to join me, because I believe they are truly answering the call to service by feeding hungry families here in Central Texas. The Central Texas Food Bank has for 35 years dutifully been fulfilling their mission of nourishing hungry people and leading the community in ending hunger. It serves communities in 21 counties surrounding Austin, and has nearly 250 partner agencies. Together they are able to benefit Texans in these communities through soup kitchens, food pantries, after-school programs, snack programs, nutrition education and many other valuable services.
Earlier this month a grand opening was held for a new Central Texas Food Bank building at 6500 Metropolis Drive in Austin. The new facilities are more than twice the size of their former location, and once at capacity, will have the ability to distribute 60 million pounds of food. Wow! And Kathy tells me that the bigger space means more volunteer opportunities.
