The AFS Cinema is the Austin Film Society’s two-screen art house theater. AFS (a 501c3 non-profit) curates a wide selection of films for its signature programs at the cinema, including repertory series, new restorations, documentaries, independent films and premieres. Additionally, the AFS Cinema offers a full schedule of first run films, featuring the best in international and independent films new to theaters. Signature film programs are often accompanied by introductions by the film programmers or other special guests. By hosting premieres, special events, local and international industry events, and the Texas Film Awards, AFS shines the national spotlight on Texas filmmakers while connecting Austin and Texas to the wider film community."

Linklater Features

  • Richard Linklater founded the Austin Film Society in 1985.

  • Attendees of AFS Cinema can participate in special film series, some of which are curated by Richard Linklater himself. Stay after the screenings, and the filmmaker may be the moderator of the Q&A!
  • Each year at the Texas Film Awards, AFS inducts individuals who have contributed to Texas’s rich legacy in film and television to the Texas Film Hall of Fame. Linklater is often in attendance. In 2018, the event took place at the AFS Cinema.
  • The AFS Cinema features an extensive collection of vintage cinema posters from around the world, all from Richard Linklater's personal collection. Currently on display are golden-era Hollywood 6-sheets, Polish artist-commissioned 1-sheets, a beautiful Saul Bass design, and a number of posters from Italy and France.
  • Another feature in the vestibule next to the Countdown piece is the “Album Wall”, conceived and designed by Richard Linklater, featuring all-movie-soundtrack album covers.
