At Work With… Victoria Callaway, Owner of VCI Artists Hair and Makeup Agency

January 25, 2021 | Houston, TX

The ‘At Work With…’ Interview Series is our way of bringing you behind-the-scenes with the names and businesses included in our Texas Production Directory (TPD). We want to showcase the creatives that cover all levels of production experience, backgrounds, and geographies around the state.

This week’s spotlight is on Victoria Callaway, Owner of VCI Artists Hair and Makeup Agency based in Houston and a Texan for 40 years.

Your claim to fame: What special skill or fun fact differentiates you from others?
Our team of artists have worked on oil rigs, airbrushed a frozen turkey to make it look like it was fully cooked, and applied makeup on alligators! We enjoy the challenge of any job.

What’s the most memorable experience on a project or production that you’ve had and what made it so special?
Years ago we worked on a Travel Texas commercial. It was fantastic to see Texas from a different prospective as from the eyes of a tourist and what makes our state so special!

What tools and supplies can’t you live without in your job and why?
An organized, super-clean hair and makeup kit. You will be judged on your kit; it shows your level of experience, ability to improvise and how serious you are about your craft.

How have Covid-19 safety protocols affected the way that you work?
Most definitely! All of our artists have been certified in sanitization for our industry. We use every precaution to keep our talent, crew and artists as safe as possible.

What are some of the projects made in Texas that you feel reflect the diverse culture of the state?
Texas has such a diverse backdrop to attract national ad campaigns. Mercedes Benz, Land Rover, Ford, Chevy, Subaru - these clients are all filmed in Texas cities, ranches, Gulf of Mexico beaches, suburban neighborhoods and in the open areas of West Texas.

Interview has been edited for brevity.

Texas has thousands of freelance individuals, companies and associations that serve the film, television, commercial, video game, animation & XR industries.
