Digital Media Production in Texas

Texas industry has always attracted the most innovative companies and minds, which includes digital media production: animation, video games, visual effects (VFX), and extended reality (XR). With groundbreaking companies like Texas Instruments and id Software, Texas has played a major role in the computer and video game industries since the 1980s and continues to remain a growing hub for production. 

Additionally, The Lone Star State is home to more than 130 animation, postproduction and visual effects companies that provide support and talent to the local and worldwide film, advertising, education, and video game industries. 

Recent Texas Projects

Video games and XR production developed or published in Texas include Gearbox’s Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands (PC/PlayStation/Xbox), Armature’s Where the Heart Leads (PlayStation), Bethesda’s Deathloop (PC/PlayStation/Xbox), EA’s Star Wars: The Old Republic – Knights of the Eternal Throne (PC), Playful Studios’ New Super Lucky’s Tale (Switch), Bonus XP’s The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics (Mac/PC/PlayStation/Switch/Xbox) and Stoic Studios’ The Banner Saga (PC).  Also be on the lookout for recently announced and upcoming titles such as Bethesda’s Starfield and Arkane Studios’ Redfall. 

Texas-made animated productions include Netflix's original series, Castlevania by Powerhouse Animation, RWBY by Rooster Teeth, YouTube Red's original series Kings of Atlantis by Mighty Coconut and the Golden Globe nominated The Book of Life by Reel FX as well as the Houston-set coming of age feature, Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Adventure. 

Extended Reality Production in Texas

As one of the leading states in the nation for video game development, it goes without saying that Texas is also a magnet for XR production—virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR).  Just a few recent titles include Mighty Coconut’s Walkabout Mini Golf (Steam VR/Oculus), Armature Studio’s Resident Evil 4 – VR (Oculus) / Sports Scramble (Oculus), and Owlchemy Labs’ Cosmonious High (Steam VR/Oculus).
