About the camp: Filmmaking 101 is an intensive four day residential workshop designed to place students right in the middle of the filmmaking process. Learn the importance of story, legal matters, and the high stress portion of all aspects of production. Not only do participants gain knowledge about the film industry and how it works but also how to get your foot in the door. Participants will work alongside established industry professionals as they prep, cast, reherse and shoot a short film during the camp.
Whether you are a student, teacher, film enthusiast, or up-and-coming filmmaker, Filmmaking 101 takes you behind the scenes to give you the tools you need to bring your story to the screen. Filmmaking 101 brings in talented industry professionals from Texas, participants will have the opportunity to work alongside these skilled artisans using professional motion picture equipment cameras and editing systems in this crash course on the art of making a film.
Filmmaking 101 is led by Texas State Alum Tom Copeland who currently teaches film in the Theatre and Dance Department. Copeland is best known as the long time director of the Texas Film Commission. His classes on the Business of Film and Short Film Development have been very popular during his six years and he's had great success in finding internships and entry level positions for many of his students here in Texas as well as Los Angeles and New York. According to Copeland this workshop is a total immersion into how the business works and how to get a job. Unlike many day camp workshops Filmmaking 101 will touch on all aspects from Development to Postproduction. Using his network of Texas industry professionals students will learn and work side by side career filmmakers in the classroom and on the set with professional equipment.
Copeland is joined by award winning filmmaker Chris Caddel formerly of the Louise Hopkins Underwood Center in Lubbock who originated the workshop. Caddel has an extensive twenty year background in filmmaking working as a director, editor, director of photography and art director.
