About the screening: In 1979, 29-year-old Astros Ace J.R. Richard let the National League with 313 strikeout and an ERA of 2.71. A year later, he was out of baseball.
Writer/Director Greg Carter captures a forgotten star's rise, fall and return in this small budget film with a big budget story. The second overall pick of the 1969 draft, J. R. Richard passed up over 200 scholarships to become one of the most unhittable pitchers of the late seventies. Halfway through the 1980 season, he suffered a major stroke and collapsed on the field, this despite countless complaints to team physicians that were ignored. He never made it back to the major leagues. By 1994, he was living under a highway overpass.
The film screens as part of the Made in Texas series that highlights movies filmed in Texas.
