Music Friendly Community Notes From the Road: August 2022

August 31, 2022 | Texas | News | Newsletter | Outreach | Music Friendly Communities

Every month, we will be sharing a recap of Community Relations and Outreach Specialist Chip Adams’s travels throughout the state. Chip manages our Music Friendly Community Program, which includes over 30 cities throughout Texas, and growing every day.

This month, Chip made an extensive sweep through North Texas, and had the opportunity to meet with several existing and potential Music Friendly Communities in the region.

Here are Chip’s Notes from the Road:

Irving – Irving City Hall

I met with members of the Irving Special Events Office, Parks and Recreation, Convention & Visitors Bureau, and local musicians to discuss the Music Friendly Community program. This was an informative meeting to help the city begin looking into the certification process. We wrapped up with a quick tour of the recently constructed amphitheater in Heritage Park.

Dallas – Good Records

With a bit of time between meetings, I made a quick pitstop to visit one of Texas’ greatest independent record stores, Good Records. After some long overdue catching up with Good Records’ Chris Penn, I picked up a copy of the latest Motorcade release from Dallas label Idol Records and began my drive up to McKinney.

McKinney – Downtown McKinney

I arrived in time to meet with both new Visit McKinney Executive Director Aaron Werner and Music Friendly Liaison Beth Shumate. We discussed McKinney’s growing music scene, plus made a stop at their Downtown record shop Red Zeppelin Records. It was a pleasure to finally meet record store owner and MFC board member Katie Scott.

Frisco – Frisco City Hall

I conducted Frisco’s Music Friendly Community workshop. This is the first official step on Frisco’s certification process towards becoming officially designated as Music Friendly by the TMO. We had a great turnout from local music stakeholders, including venue operators, concert promoters, City Council members, Parks and Recreation, and Visit Frisco. A big thank you to Marla Roe and Lisa Bathea with Visit Frisco for coordinating the workshop. It was great to see the enthusiasm from the workshop attendees!

We look forward to seeing more of you when we’re on the road next!
