Wind Quintet Op. 4…………………............................………...…Carl Nielsen
Nonet in E flat Major, Op. 38 for Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bass……………....................................Louise Farrenc
Mozart wrote his Oboe Quartet for a virtuoso friend, so there’s plenty to listen to in this beautiful piece, from fugue-like intricacy to a mournful, pleading, dark middle movement to the buoyant Rondo finale.
Carl Nielsen wrote his Wind Quintet, regarded to be one of the finest ever written, for five of his friends—so, a fitting piece to hear after the Mozart. Each part is cunningly made to suit the individuality of each player and the characters of the various instruments. In the composer’s words," At one moment they are all talking at once, at another they are quite alone.”
From its majestic introduction to its joyous ending, Louise Farrenc’s masterfully written piece will become one of your new favorites. It made Farrenc’s career, probably due to the enthusiasm of Joseph Joachim—one of Europe’s leading violinists who, in 1850, participated in the public premiere of the Nonet in front of a large and appreciative audience.
