Opening Weekend: Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe
Sept. 29, 30 & Oct. 1, 2023
Opening weekend will be “très magnifique” as Music Director Juraj Valčuha leads dazzling French masterworks! Spotlighting the Houston Symphony Chorus, Poulenc’s Gloria surges with playful spirit and celebratory fanfare. From a shimmering “musical sunrise” you’ll practically see to a rapturous ending guaranteed to bring down the house, Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe is live music at its most electrifying.

Seong-Jin Cho Plays Ravel
Oct. 7 & 8, 2023
Chopin International Piano Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho unfurls the shimmering colors and jazzy panache of Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. Betsy Jolas’s A Little Summer Suite “tickles the ears from the opening twists of the rainstick” (The Times, London). And, dive into a world of psychedelic fantasy and unbridled imagination when Music Director Juraj Valčuha leads Symphonie fantastique—way ahead of its time in 1830, every bit as astonishing today.

Barber’s Violin Concerto + Duke Ellington
Oct. 14 & 15, 2023
The outstanding Valeriy Sokolov performs Barber’s enchanting Violin Concerto. Ending with a rollicking dance inspired by Argentine gauchos, Alberto Ginastera’s Estancia will have you dancing in your seat. And, hit the bustling streets of Harlem with jazz-infused music by Duke Ellington.

Valčuha Conducts Rachmaninoff
Nov. 10, 11 & 12, 2023
Rachmaninoff’s breathtakingly beautiful melodies hold a special place in the hearts of music lovers the world over. Immerse yourself in his glittering final masterpiece, Symphonic Dances, and witness “the most perfectly accomplished pianist of his generation” (The Independent) tackle one of the most notoriously difficult challenges in the piano repertoire, Prokofiev’s fiery Piano Concerto No. 2. The concert opens with Gabriela Ortiz’s Kauyumari, inspired by the Mexican legend of the Blue Deer.

Valčuha Conducts Ravel’s La valse
Nov. 17, 18 & 19, 2023
Audience favorite Jean-Yves Thibaudet applies his peerless technique and poetic touch to Ravel’s blues-tinged Piano Concerto in G. Music Director Juraj Valčuha and the orchestra perform the U.S. premiere of Pretty, a co-commission from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Julia Wolfe. And, the Viennese waltz takes a walk on the wild side in Ravel’s showstopping La valse.

Andrés Returns
Dec. 1, 2 & 3, 2023
Conductor Laureate Andrés Orozco-Estrada leads Shostakovich’s cinematic, richly evocative Symphony No. 11, The Year 1905. It’s a work with important ties to Houston—the Houston Symphony gave the U.S. premiere in 1957, and released the first-ever commercial recording shortly after. Recognized as one of the great violinists of our time, the incomparable Augustin Hadelich returns with Shostakovich’s dynamic Violin Concerto No. 1.
