Petroleum Refining & Chemicals

Texas leads the nation in petroleum refining and is a global leader in petrochemicals.

The Petroleum Refining and Chemicals sector is focused on the conversion of crude oil into petroleum products, including chemicals, fuel and plastics. Texas refineries process almost 6.3 million barrels of crude oil per day, which is one-third of the nation's refining capacity. The state is home to the nation’s largest petrochemical cluster with more than 130,000 people employed in the industry. The largest concentration of these hardworking Texans is in Houston, the energy capital of the nation. Texas is also the #1 chemical producing state in the U.S., supplying products used to make pharmaceuticals, computers, transportation, infrastructure and other everyday items.

Texas Advantages: Texas has the most crude oil refineries and the largest refining capacity in the nation thanks to our pro-growth economic policies offering regulatory certainty, our highly skilled and growing workforce, a central geographic location in North America and robust infrastructure providing direct access to domestic and international markets. Texas also offers room to grow with lower land costs, fewer land-use restrictions, faster permitting, lower energy costs, lower costs of living and more. As a top state today for engineering graduates and home to 16 Tier One research universities, Texas is building a skilled workforce pipeline for tomorrow.
