Lemon Jefferson

  • The Handbook of Texas Music
    The Texas State Historical Association just published the Handbook of Texas Music, an encyclopedia with 461 articles covering the full range of our state's dominant art form: Music. Also included are more than 125 photos and illustrations, many from the archives of the Barker Texas History Center.
  • The Handbook of Texas Online - Lemon Jefferson entry
    The Handbook of Texas Online is a multidisciplinary encyclopedia of Texas history, geography, and culture sponsored by the Texas State Historical Association and the General Libraries at UT Austin; this article was written by Alan Govenar.
  • Lemon Jefferson in the Black Music Research Journal
    The spring 2000 Black Music Research Journal published by the Center for Black Music Research is devoted to Lemon Jefferson. Volume 20, No. 1 (Spring 2000). Articles include "Blind Lemon Jefferson: The Myth and the Man", by Alan Govenar; "Blind Lemon Meets Leadbelly", by Kip Lornell; "The Language of Blind Lemon Jefferson: The Covert Theme of Blindness", by Luigi Monge; and "Musical Innovation in the Blues of Blind Lemon Jefferson", by David Evans.

Blues Music

  • In Texas, blues developed a unique character that results not only from the introduction of the electric guitar, but also from the cross-pollination of musical styles itself. The influence of blues and jazz is apparent in the wide variety of Texas music past and present. Blues in Texas evolved in proximity to important musical traditions such as Cajun, Creole, Zydeco, Tejano, Norteño, Conjunto, Polka, Big Band, Western Swing, Country and Rock & Roll.
  • Year of the Blues
    The United States Congress proclaimed 2003 as the ‘Year of the Blues'.
