TMO August 2019 Community Outreach
Throughout the month of August, the Texas Music Office participated in conferences, workshops, and held workshops of its own, across the state and in neighboring Louisiana. The following are some highlights from the TMO's August 2019 community outreach work.
Theresa Jenkins: An Advocate For The Texas Music Industry
A tireless advocate for Texas artists, Theresa Jenkins’ leadership as the Senior Executive Director of the Texas Chapter of the Recording Academy ushered in countless opportunities for musicians around the state during her tenure with the chapter over the last 15 years. She also inspired students and aspiring artists with her Grammy In The Schools community outreach work in Texas high schools all around the state, as well as with the Grammy U chapters that continue to launch at Texas universities and colleges...providing students with a runway and access to careers in music.
TESLAW Accepting Nominations For The Cindi Lazzari Artist Advocate Award
The State Bar of Texas Entertainment and Sports Law Section (TESLAW) announced that nominations for the Cindi Lazzari Artist Advocate Award are open now until October 1, 2019. The award is named for the late Cindi Lazzari, a leading Texas attorney who went far beyond the call of duty in her efforts to protect the rights of artists in the music industry.
5 Questions With An Industry Professional: DJ & Event Promoter Martha Reyna
We continue our 5 Questions With An Industry Professional interview series with Martha Reyna, event promoter for this weekend's Tighten Up Texas Soul Weekender, a multi-day dance party and record swap in Houston at the Continental Club and Pink Elephant Room, with classic and underground soul music fueled by some of Texas' best vinyl DJ (as well as DJs flying in from various points around the world)...and featuring a performance from Houston soul music living legend Archie Bell.
Music Friendly Community Workshop - Waco
The Texas Music Office will host a Music Friendly Community workshop on Wednesday, August 28, in Waco. The workshop is open to anyone interested in learning about the new Texas Music Office program that seeks to foster music business economic development in Texas cities and communities. Brendon Anthony, director of the Texas Music Office within the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development and Tourism Division, will be present to explain the Music Friendly Community designation and answer questions.
Independent Venue Week Accepting Applications for 2020 Edition
INDEPENDENT VENUE WEEK is currently accepting applications for its summer 2020 iteration. The concert series debuted in Texas July 8 - 14, 2019, with independently owned music venues joining an annual international series of shows, bringing together music venues, rising and established artists, promoters, labels, media, and tastemakers. Texas featured one of highest number of participating venues of any state with shows in Amarillo, Austin, Dallas, Houston and San Antonio.
Texas Music Showcases at Folk Alliance International
The Texas Music Office will return to the annual Folk Alliance International Conference in January 2020 to host Texas music showcases for the fourth year in a row. Performers for the main showcase stages are drawn from official applications to the conference. The deadline for artist applications is July 15.
Governor Abbott Announces San Angelo Designated As Music Friendly Community
Governor Greg Abbott announced that San Angelo, having completed the multi-step certification process, has been designated as a Music Friendly Community by the Texas Music Office. The Music Friendly Community program seeks to foster music business economic development in Texas cities and communities. Brendon Anthony, director of the Texas Music Office within the Office of the Governor’s Economic Development Division, presented the Music Friendly Community designation in San Angelo to Mayor Brenda Gunter on Thursday, June 27, 2019 during a presentation at The House of FiFi Dubois that was open to the public.
