Top Artists and Cowboys Team up in San Angelo, Texas
An improbable combination of award-winning artists and world-champion cowboys converges on the San Angelo Fairgrounds during the 6th annual EnPleinAirTEXAS week-long competition and the 66th annual San Angelo Roping Fiesta.
The 34 artists, selected from 17 states, are in San Angelo, Texas to compete in one of the top 5 plein air competitions in the country October 19 – 27, 2019. ‘En plein air’ is the French term for painting outdoors.
Half of the artists are new to Texas and will experience authentic West Texas culture first-hand while painting the creeks and back hills of historic private ranches as well as the unexpected charm of the International Waterlily Gardens.
Cowboys and calf-roping are next on the agenda. Saturday morning, October 26th, the public is invited to explore the San Angelo Fairgrounds and watch as artists paint among cowboys and horse-trailers, over 400 youth and their animals at a Jr. Livestock Show, and the Cody Ohl’s Jr. World Championship Calf Roping.
Area artists may participate and paint by registering online or pay the $10 fee that morning and join the EnPleinAirTEXAS artists. Cash awards totaling $2600 will be presented at noon by 2019 EnPleinAirTEXAS Awards Judge Don Demers, master marine and landscape artist from Eliot, Maine.
That afternoon, many EnPleinAirTEXAS artists will move to the outdoor arena to capture on canvas the action of some of the top ropers in the world vying for the title of ‘San Angelo Roping Fiesta Champion’, at the top of the list in roping credentials.
An exhibit of almost 300 freshly painted scenes of West Texas culture and land is on display and for sale all weekend at Fort Concho, with a Chuck Wagon brunch to top off the events on Sunday. All painting sales benefit not only the artists, but also support the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts wide range of educational programs that reach over 33,000 students annually.
