Governor Abbott Appoints Five To Council On Cardiovascular Disease And Stroke
Governor Greg Abbott appointed Christine Cox and Brittany Henson and reappointed Remedios “Remmy” Perez Morris to the Council on Cardiovascular Disease and Stroke for terms set to expire on February 1, 2031. Additionally, the Governor appointed Jennifer Scott and Lauri Speirs to the board for terms set to expire on February 1, 2027. The Council is charged with developing an effective and resource‐efficient plan to reduce the morbidity, mortality, and economic burden of cardiovascular disease and stroke in Texas.
Christine Cox of Aurora is a nurse practitioner and the director of Extended Care services at Front Line Mobile Health. She also serves as a board director for the North Central Texas Organization for Nursing Leadership, and a health and wellness committee member for the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. She is also a member of the American Association of Nurses, the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the Oncology Nursing Society, the American Nephrology Nurses Association, and the National Fire Protection Association. Additionally, she is a parishioner at Saint Elizabeth Anne Seton Catholic Church and a volunteer nurse practitioner at Mercy Clinic. Cox received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech University Health Science Center and a Master of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University.
Brittany Henson of Hemphill is a senior program consultant at the American Heart Association (AHA). Additionally, she is a registered nurse at Sabine County Hospital. Henson received a Bachelor of Science in Health and Biology and a Master of Education in Health from Sam Houston State University and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Texas (UT) at Arlington.
Remedios “Remmy” Perez Morris of Round Rock is retired. She previously served as a member of the Governor’s EMS Trauma Advisory Stroke Committee. Morris received an Associate of Arts in Journalism and Public Relations from Austin Community College, attended Texas State University, and is a 2006 graduate of Leadership Round Rock.
Jennifer Scott of Fort Worth is the system program director for the Heart and Vascular Service Line at Texas Health Resources. Scott is a member of the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the Texas Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation, and the American Nurses Association. Scott also serves as an executive committee member for the AHA – Tarrant County Heart Walk and as a Hands Only CPR volunteer teacher for the American Heart Association. Scott received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UT Arlington and a Master of Business Administration from Western Governors University and is an Advanced-Board Certified Nurse Executive.
Lauri Speirs of Kennedale is the stroke program clinical nurse specialist at JPS Health Network. She is a member of the AHA, the American Association of Neuroscience Nurses, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. Additionally, she is a volunteer with the Travis County Food Bank. Speirs received an Associate Degree in Nursing from Odessa College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix, and a Master of Science in Nursing from Grand Canyon University.
