Texanthropy Spotlight: Challenge of Tarrant County

Challenge of Tarrant County is a nonprofit that aims to eliminate substance abuse in the local communities in and around Fort Worth. The three main principles of Challenge are education, advocacy and action, with a focus on prevention of drug and alcohol abuse and addiction. Just one of the many ways they are making an impact is by recognizing the amazing things the youth of Tarrant County are doing. Each year in April, Challenge holds their annual Leo C. Benavides Awards Dinner.

Women of Courage is a group of philanthropic women from across Texas who serve as ambassadors of the children’s advocacy centers (CAC) movement by working to raise awareness about child abuse and provide private financial support to local CACs.

Texanthropy Spotlight: Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County

Earlier this week I attended the Great Futures Luncheon in Lake Jackson, benefitting the Boys and Girls Club of Brazoria County. I was joined by local leaders and community members in recognizing the Club for providing a safe place for children to learn and thrive, and to also help support the Club and its programs and mission.

Texanthropy Spotlight: AGE of Central Texas

During my years working at a senior health care services company, I had the pleasure of learning about a wonderful organization here in Austin that offers programming to older adults and family caregivers: AGE of Central Texas. Founded in 1986, AGE provides direct services to hundreds of older adults each year. AGE is the only licensed adult day health care center in the area. Other services include free loans of durable medical equipment to keep seniors safe and mobile, and invaluable education, resources, and support to the unpaid family caregivers who are supporting an older loved one.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of meeting with fundraising professional representatives from the Greater Austin Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) during their Advocacy Workshop. It was such an honor to have the opportunity to join dozens of dedicated professionals from so many extraordinary Austin non-profit organizations.

Each May is celebrated as Older Americans Month, a time to honor and celebrate the many contributions of our senior citizens. This year the Administration for Community Living, which leads our nation's observance of Older American's Month, has designated the theme as “Engage at Every Age” which emphasizes the many ways older adults make a difference in our communities through service. That is why this week’s Texanthropy Spotlight is on Arlen and Mary ’Beth Lohse, two Senior Corps volunteers in San Angelo, and the 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Awards Senior Corps “Make a Difference” Award winners.

May is Military Appreciation Month, which makes it the perfect time to tell you about one of the 2017 Governor’s Volunteer Award winners – USAA, which was given the Corporate Community Impact Award. This award recognizes a private sector entity for having community service as a core value and business strategy, and for implementing employee volunteer programs that will have a long-term impact in their community.
