Job Purpose Summary
Austin Film Society is seeking a Head of Marketing and Engagement (HoME) to take global ownership of AFS’s marketing, communications, outreach and engagement strategies with a goal of seamlessly integrating these functions into our diverse slate of programmatic and operational efforts. The HoME must be experienced in marketing and communications strategy, event strategy, audience development, and community engagement.
This executive-level position is a key leadership role that will report directly to the CEO and oversee a seven-member Marketing and Communications department. As a leader at AFS, this role must work successfully across the organization and effectively enroll others in developing and executing strategy. The ideal candidate will demonstrate high professionalism, extensive experience in cross-organizational collaboration, and strategic decision-making capabilities.
Essential Responsibilities & Duties
- Stakeholder Care and Expansion Strategy
- Maximize audiences in service of AFS’s dual bottom line of program impact and financial sustainability
- Develop omnichannel marketing strategy to ensure all facets support AFS’s diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) efforts
- Drive revenue growth by optimizing marketing strategies to attract and retain new customers and donors
- Create and oversee partnership strategy for promotional and community partnerships; support programmatic and development partnerships
- Develop strategy to engage with targeted AFS audiences
- Integration of Marketing, Communications and Events across AFS
- Oversee the execution of the annual Texas Film Awards Gala for maximum engagement and storytelling impact. Lead event planning, marketing and communications strategy, creative direction, and event budgeting.
- Develop an organization-wide events strategy that advances AFS’s strategic plan and meets net income goals
- Support the fundraising team via:
Institutional communications cycle using information from programs and events
Messaging and collateral as needed across all campaigns and events - Enhance strategies that grow new and repeat business at the AFS Cinema
- Brand Integrity and Awareness Strategy
- Expand awareness of AFS’s brand locally and statewide
- Lead major institutional communication moments, including crisis communications
- Collaborate with Director of Marketing to facilitate and provide direction of AFS storytelling and institutional marketing opportunities
- Ensure digital and printed marketing assets effectively convey AFS’s brand and story
- Operations and Leadership
- Oversee the implementation of marketing strategies; provide reports on efficacy to CEO and Executive Team
- Build, lead, and mentor a proactive, collaborative, impactful and highly regarded team; responsible for all aspects of managing people including hiring, coaching, developing, and managing performance aligned with AFS’s values
- Supervise Director of Marketing; Sr. Manager, Events and PR; and Outreach & Engagement Manager
- Oversee resource allocation for marketing, communications, outreach, and operations across programs
- Serve on the AFS Leadership Team and Executive Team
Required Critical Skills
- 10+ years of relevant experience in translating artistic vision through marketing, communications, and branding strategies
- Demonstrated record of conceptualizing and implementing audience development strategies
- Skilled in creating powerful, compelling written and oral communications for fundraising, as well as experience and credibility when presenting to external audiences
- Ability to demonstrate a strong team-oriented approach, fostering collaboration and effective communication with colleagues across various departments
- Strong managerial and coaching skills, fluent at providing feedback and mentoring
- Ability to engage, cultivate and manage relationships with key strategic partners
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects to meet deadlines and produce results
- Ability to self-advocate, communicate, and negotiate effectively
- Appreciation for AFS’s mission and vision

Position Type and Expected Hours
This is a full-time, exempt position. Work hours vary. Some nights and weekends required.
Complexities and Conditions of Employment
Physical / Environmental Demands: Sitting and/or standing, keyboarding, reading, grasping, mousing, handwriting for up to 8-hours per day, and lifting or moving weight of 20lbs are essential requirements for the position. Position requires reliable transportation.
