AFS is seeking a Senior Manager to develop, support, and maintain its slate of Filmmaker Support programs. AFS Filmmaker Support programs nurture the local film ecosystem by providing life-changing opportunities to artists and producers through grants, support services, and educational and networking opportunities. The Manager will utilize industry knowledge, experience, and current trends to inform program development and provide counseling to artists. The Manager will also conduct events, panels, workshops, and more to connect artists with opportunities, resources, and people and position regional filmmakers for career leaps. The successful candidate will have film production experience, including development, financing, physical production, post-production, and distribution for independent film.
This position will report to the Director of Programs and serves as supervisor to the Filmmaker Support Coordinator. They will work closely with Filmmaker Support and Marketing staff as well as a variety of artists, creatives, and industry and community partners on a regular basis.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Filmmaker Support Program Development and Management
● Manages slate of AFS Filmmaker Support programs that fulfill AFS’s mission to provide life-changing opportunities to artists
● Participates in program design, development, strategy, and evaluation for new and existing filmmaker support programs
● Develops filmmaker community-facing networking and educational programming opportunities by leveraging AFS assets and opportunities (e.g. AFS Cinema programs)
● Project manages application cycle for programs, including drafting announcements, providing outreach, and setting timelines
● Manages feedback and review process for application-based programs, including AFS Grants, Intensives and Works-In-Progress programs
● Hosts virtual and in-person program workshops and events
● Oversees the creation and update of materials associated with programs
● Designs and analyzes program evaluation assessments and manages process of feedback collection from participants, flagging areas for improvement to Director of Programs
● Maintains knowledge of trends and current events in the film/media industry to inform program development
● Furthers AFS’s Diversity Equity and Inclusion efforts through program design and filmmaker engagement
Stakeholder Relationships & Engagement
● Serves as primary point of contact for filmmakers, providing information, counseling, and referrals to external opportunities
● Serves as primary point of contact for participants during in-person programs
● Serves as staff liaison for the Filmmaker Advisory Committee, organizing and managing communications, meetings, and agendas
● Cultivates and maintains relationships with local and Texas-based film organizations and festivals
● Engages with prospective AFS Grant reviewers, workshop participants, and filmmakers
● Collaborates with Marketing Department to make creative, dynamic campaigns to engage potential filmmaker participants with AFS programs
● Represents AFS publicly through outreach and industry engagement opportunities
Budget Management and Department Administration
● Monitors the program budget and reviews monthly financial reports at the transactional level to confirm revenues and expenses
● Participates in the annual budgeting process to develop Filmmaker Support program budget
● Ensures that programs are delivered within budget
● Serves as supervisor to the Filmmaker Support Coordinator
● Provides quality control for sponsored projects accounting
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
● 5+ years of experience in the film/media industry
● Experience in independent film production and distribution; the ideal candidate will have served in a producer capacity for more than one independent feature-length film (narrative or documentary)
● 1+ years of experience in program development and management
● Strong project management skills
● Strong written and verbal communication skills
● Ability to create and facilitate presentations, webinars, and events
● Ability to independently prioritize workload and lead multiple projects simultaneously
● Creative and action-oriented
● Strong interpersonal skills, proven networking skills, and a desire to connect authentically with others
● Flexibility on nights and weekends required for events
● Ability to communicate in additional languages a plus
● Appreciation for AFS’s mission and vision
