The Roy W. Dean Grant for Summer 2026 is now open for submissions—inviting filmmakers with bold, meaningful stories to take the next step toward funding and completing their projects.

For 35 years, the Roy W. Dean Grants have supported independent films that are unique and make a contribution to society, helping bring powerful stories to audiences that might not otherwise be seen. The grant is presented by From the Heart Productions, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to supporting filmmakers.

Open to documentaries, narrative features, short films, and web series, the grant supports projects that are socially impactful and budgeted at $500,000 or less. Students are encouraged to apply.

What the Winner Receives:

$3,500 cash award
Thousands more in donated film products and services, including:
- 30% discount on music post-production services from AudioKut (Jerry Deaton)
- 35% discount on lighting services from Paskal Lighting, Hollywood
- $1,295 Writers Boot Camp scholarship (online or live Professional Membership)
- $500 in grip, lighting, or expendables from Filmtools
- And more from our generous industry donors

Stories That Matter Awards
In addition to the main grant, three filmmakers will each receive a $500 cash award. These awards honor films that reflect real lives, communities, and pressing social issues—stories that stay with us because they matter.

Every Filmmaker Gets Support Just by Applying
Every applicant is offered a 15-minute consultation on their project. Filmmakers receive guidance on funding strategies, building donor or investor networks, marketing their film, and more—ensuring that applying is a meaningful step forward.
