About TANEO
In 2023, Governor Greg Abbott directed the Public Utility Commission of Texas to create the Texas Advanced Nuclear Reactor Energy Working Group to study the advanced nuclear energy industry and provide recommendations and strategies to position Texas as No. 1 in the advanced nuclear energy industry.
Governor Abbotts' Directive to Texas PUC
Under Governor Abbott’s leadership, with the support of the Working Group’s final report, House Bill 14 (HB 14) passed the 89th Texas Legislature in 2025. Authored by Representative Cody Harris and Senator Charles Schwertner, HB 14 established the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office (TANEO) within the Office of the Governor of Texas, and created a $350 million Texas Advanced Nuclear Development Fund to support the development and commercialization of the advanced nuclear energy in Texas.

The Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office was established to provide strategic leadership for the advanced nuclear industry and associated supply chain industries in Texas; promote the development of advanced nuclear reactors for dispatchable electric generation while creating high-wage advanced manufacturing jobs in this state; lead the transition to a balanced energy future by advancing innovative nuclear energy generation technologies while delivering safe, reliable, and clean energy solutions that address the state's growing demand; enhance the state's energy security, foster economic growth, and ensure the safety of future nuclear energy generation development; identify barriers to the financial viability of nuclear energy; leverage the expertise and capacity of institutions of higher education, the nuclear energy industry, the industrial manufacturing sector, and regulatory stakeholders to develop a comprehensive strategic plan to ensure the development of advanced nuclear energy and associated technologies in this state; and support the development of an advanced nuclear energy supply chain and associated manufacturing capacity in this state.
Additionally, the Texas Advanced Nuclear Energy Office provides guidance and coordination for nuclear project developers through Texas' state-level regulatory processes. TANEO serves a a single point of contact for project developers, acting as a liason with state agencies to accelerate their projects through the state permit and regulatory processes.
