Communication Specialist – Austin, Texas

The Office of the Governor is looking for a Communication Specialist (Information Specialist III) to work in the Constituent Communication Division.

The salary is $4,263.17 - $5,521.00 a month ($51,158.04 – $66,252.00 a year).

What You’ll Do

This  position performs highly complex (senior-level) informational and content generation work. Work involves researching, writing, editing, and producing correspondence and communication for release to the public, elected officials, and other state and federal agencies.

  • Receives, sorts, assigns, and oversees correspondence received from constituents.
  • Communicates the administration’s position on key issues and public policies through written and verbal means to various constituencies.
  • Communicates with various internal and external constituencies through writing and by phone.
  • Prepares and emails referrals and typical responses.
  • Writes, edits, and proofreads the work of others in a collaborative and positive manner.
  • Enters data and information into a complex customer relations management system. 
  • Verifies facts, dates, and statistics using standard references and sources.
  • Consults appropriate agency staff for background and issue development while composing appropriate responses for correspondence.
  • Refers general inquiries concerning state government programs and activities to appropriate state agencies for handling.
  • Documents contact information in an automated database and master catalogue of approved language.
  • Maintains knowledge of current events with regard to change and innovation in state governmental affairs and public policy.
  • Assists with tracking trends, identifying issues, and relaying information to the Director and Deputy Director.
  • Assists with onboarding and training Constituent Service Representatives and other Communications Specialist.
  • Establishes and maintains a regular attendance record and a reliable body of work performance.

How You’ll Qualify

  • High school graduate or equivalent; and
  • Three (3) years of related work experience as a writer, editor, or similar communications position, demonstrating skills and experience with interpersonal communication or mass media practices.

Note: Experience and education may be substituted for one another on a year-for-year basis.  

You’re a Great Fit with

  • Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in English, journalism, government, political science, public relations, marketing, or a related field;
  • Experience working within tight deadlines in a demanding environment;
  • Knowledgeable of the administration’s key initiatives and policy positions; and
  • Proficient in the use of automated information tracking systems and advanced use of Microsoft Office Suite products, including Word, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.
