Stephen F. Austin University's Department of Music has more than 300 music majors. The Department has 35 faculty members (most with doctorates), each committed to challenging gifted students preparing for a variety of educational and professional opportunities. The choral and instrumental ensembles within the Department have received national recognition and have toured internationally. Large ensemble experiences are balanced with chamber music opportunities in groups such as Chamber Winds, Jazz Ensemble, Madrigal Singers, and numerous quintets and quartets. The department also offers outstanding programs in Opera, Composition and Keyboard. Considered an ideal size, the Department of Music at Stephen F. Austin is capable of offering a full spectrum of musical curricula and experiences while providing much personal attention at the same time.
Performance opportunities include the SFA A Cappella Choir (45 voices); Madrigal Singers (12 singers); Concert Choir (60 voices)--all under the direction of Dr. Tim King and Michael Dean; Wind Symphony (40 instrumentalists; Fred J. Allen, director); Symphonic Band (60 instrumentalists) and Concert Band (50 instrumentalists)--both under the direction of David Campo; Orchestra of the Pines (70 instrumentalists; Jeff Jacobsen, director); Lumberjack Marching Band (240 members; David Campo, director) SFA Chamber Orchestra (25 members; Jeff Jacobsen, director) (936) 468-4602.
Performance facilities include the Turner Auditorium (1,100 seats; Dr. Richard Berry, Dean, 936-468-2801), SFA Music Recital Hall (150 seats; Dr. Ron Anderson, Chair, 936-468-4602), and the Cole Concert Hall (350).
