April 8, 2016 | Austin, Texas | Press Release

Governor Greg Abbott today announced that the 54 students who won competitions at the 2016 Texas Science and Engineering Fair, hosted by the University of Texas at San Antonio last weekend, have been awarded scholarships to attend the Texas Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy. The Academy is a weeklong residential summer camp co-sponsored by the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) and will be held this summer at Texas A&M University.

“Innovation is what Texas does best, and this year’s winners exemplify the innovative spirit that has propelled the Lone Star State to be a national leader in job creation,” said Governor Abbott. “Texas is inspiring and encouraging a new generation of entrepreneurs, and I am confident that programs like the Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy will help our students excel in STEM fields and beyond.”

“The 2016 Texas Science and Engineering Fair provided an opportunity for competing students to demonstrate their creativity and innovation while gaining knowledge that will assist them as they pursue future education and careers in science, technology, engineering and math fields,” said Texas Workforce Commission Chairman Andres Alcantar. “I applaud the dedication and hard work displayed by all of the participants in the regional and state competitions and congratulate the state fair senior division winners who will make up the prestigious class at this summer’s Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy.”

The Governor’s Science and Technology Champions Academy participants will engage in hands-on activities in the areas of analytical chemistry, aerospace engineering, veterinary science, and cyber security. The scholarships awarded to science fair winners cover the entire cost of the residential summer camp.

More than 1,200 middle and high school students who qualified at regional competitions competed in the Texas Science and Engineering Fair. Winners from the senior division advance to the International Science and Engineering Fair competition in Phoenix, Arizona in May.
