Governor Appoints Seven To Radiation Advisory Board

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Mark Harvey, Neal Leavell, Gerald Powell, Missy Shorey and Simon Trubek and reappointed Kenneth Krieger to the Texas Radiation Advisory Board for terms set to expire April 16, 2021. Additionally, he has appointed Karen Newton for a term set to expire April 16, 2017. The board advises the state on radiation issues and reviews the rules, policies and programs of state agencies that regulate radiation.

Mark Harvey, Ph.D. of Houston is an assistant professor of physics at Texas Southern University. He is a member of the Health Physics Society, American Association of Physicists in Medicine, National Society of Black Physicists and the American Physical Society and a former member of the Minority Recruitment Subcommittee of the American Association of Physicists. He also serves as a technical reviewer for the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and is a former volunteer with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Virginia and mentored students during his post-doctoral tenure at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY. Harvey received a Bachelor of Science in physics from Virginia State University, Master of Science in physics and a Doctor of Philosophy in nuclear physics from Hampton University.

Neal Leavell, D.D.S. of Lampasas is a dentist at Lampasas Dental Center. He is a member of the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, Academy of General Dentistry, Texas Farm Bureau and the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association and former president of the Heart of Texas Dental Society. He is president of the Lampasas Economic Development Corporation and has volunteered with First United Methodist Church of Lampasas, as well as many other local boards. Leavell received a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Baylor University and a Doctor of Dental Surgery from the Baylor College of Dentistry, and completed his general practice residency at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital.

Gerald Powell of Bay City is an executive vice president and chief nuclear officer with the STP Nuclear Operating Company. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and has served as chairman of the Nuclear Power Institute Advisory Council, Matagorda County United Way Board of Directors, Bay City Independent School District Board of Trustees and the Bay City Country Club Board of Directors. He also volunteers for the Texas A&M Nuclear Engineering Advisory Council, EPRI Chemistry and Health Physics Committee and the EPRI Nuclear Power Council. Powell received a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering from Texas A&M University and a Master of Business Administration from the Mays Business School at Texas A&M University.

Missy Shorey of Dallas is president and chief executive officer of Shorey Public Relations, L.L.C. Previously, she served as senior vice president for Hill Knowlton International Public Relations and as an expert consultant for the United States Department of State in Washington, D.C. Shorey is a member of the Public Relations Society of America and a graduate of Leadership Texas. Shorey received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from the University of Florida and a Masters of Business Administration from American University.

Simon Trubek, M.D. of Houston is a Nuclear Medicine Radiologist with the Austin Radiological Association. He is a member of the American Board of Radiology and the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. Trubek received a Bachelor of Science in physiology from The University of Texas at Austin and a Doctor of Medicine from Baylor College of Medicine.

Kenneth Krieger of Lacy Lakeview is the Radiation Safety Officer for Radiation Technology Inc. He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and the National Health Physics Society Board of Directors, past president of the South Texas Chapter of the Health Physics Society and past secretary of the American Academy of Health Physics. Additionally, he volunteers with the Waco Area Food Bank. Krieger received Bachelors of Science in marine biology and marine science from Texas A&M University at Galveston and a Master of Science in health physics from Texas A&M University.

Karen Newton of San Antonio has dedicated the past 28 years serving as a community volunteer in and around San Antonio with many organizations including the Junior League of San Antonio, Catholic Charities and the San Antonio Symphony League. Newton received a Bachelor of Science in textile production and management from the State University of New York and a Master of Science in sociology from The University of Texas at San Antonio.
