Governor Abbott Appoints 7 To Texas Board Of Nursing

Governor Greg Abbott has appointed Diana Flores, Francis Stokes, Dr. Allison Edwards and David E. Saucedo II, and reappointed Kathy Leader-Horn, to the Board of Nursing for terms to expire on January 31, 2021.  He also appointed Dr. Doris Jackson and Laura Disque to the Board for terms to expire January 31, 2017, and January 31, 2019, respectively.

Diana Flores, Lt. Col. (ret), of Helotes is a registered nurse and is a veteran of the U.S. Air Force, having been honorably discharged after 25 years of service.  She is currently an action officer and nurse subject matter expert for the U.S. Army at Fort Sam Houston, where she provides oversight for the MEDCOM Ombudsman Program and works with regional medical commands, the Wounded Warrior Resource Center, and the Wounded Soldier and Family Hotline.  She is a member of the National Association of Hispanic Nurses, American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Association, and Association of Military Surgeons of the U.S.  Flores received her bachelor of science from Texas Woman’s University and her masters from the University of Phoenix.

Francis Stokes of Port Aransas is a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and is a vice president at First Community Bank in Corpus Christi.  He is chairman of the Port Aransas Recreational Development Corporation, and he is a member of the Port Aransas VFW and the National Association of Government Guaranteed Lenders – Small Lender (West) Committee.  Stokes received a bachelor of business administration from Texas A&M University, Kingsville.

Allison Edwards, DrPH, of Bellaire is a registered nurse and serves as lead faculty for the bachelor of science program at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Nursing. She is a member of the Southern Nursing Research Society, American Public Health Association, and Texas Nursing Association. Dr. Edwards received a bachelor of science from The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, a master of science from Texas Woman’s University, and a doctorate from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Public Health.

David E. Saucedo II of El Paso is president of The Saucedo Lock Company, a 4th generation family business started in 1917.  He serves as vice-president of the Boys and Girls Club of El Paso, board member of the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, member of the Borderplex Alliance, and founding co-chair of the Circle of Giants for the El Paso Museum of History.  Saucedo received a bachelor of business administration from the University of Notre Dame.

Kathy Leader-Horn of Granbury is a licensed vocational nurse and serves as school nurse for Parkway Elementary School in Crowley.  She is a member of the National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses and participates in the Healthy Kids School Lunch and Operation School Supplies programs.  Leader-Horn received a vocational nurse certificate from the John Peter Smith School of Vocational Nursing. 

Doris Jackson, DHA (ABD), of Pearland is a registered nurse and is a professor for the associate degree nursing program at Lone Star College – Kingwood. She is a member of the Society of Pediatric Nurses, Texas Nurse Association, American Nurse Association, TCCTA, and Student Nurse Association Faculty Advisor.  Dr. Jackson received a bachelor of science and a master of science from Prairie View A&M University, and she received a doctorate from Capella University.

Laura Disque of Edinburg is a registered nurse and serves as vice president of nursing for surgical/procedural services for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. She is a member of the American Organization for Nurse Executives, American Nurses Association, Texas Nurses Organization and the American Hospital Association. Disque received a bachelor of science from Texas State University and a master of science from the University of Phoenix.

These appointments are subject to Senate confirmation.
